The adjacent Nyambene hills are a catchment area and give rise to 13 rivers which flow through the Park and drain into Kenya’s longest river, the Tana. This gives the park a diversity in the avian life with over 400 bird species recorded. There is a rhino sanctuary giving you the opportunity to see this iconic beast. Lions leopards and cheetahs are the big cats here and big herds of buffalo ensure the predators survive. The unique Samburu five, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, grevys zebra gerenuk and the oryx are highlights. On early mornings you can get the striped hyena lions and cheetahs. On the last two nights we spend at the olpajeta conservancy right at the equator. This is one of the best places to see both the back and white rhino in East Africa. It is also the last home for the critically endangered Northern white rhinos. You have an opportunity to ride with the rhinos in the endangered species enclosure where you get up close the raining two northern white rhinos.
